The 2018 Tetrasoft Marriott Open Rated Chess Tournament took place from September 19th to 23rd at the state-of –the-art facilities at the Marriott hotel, Hyderabad. The tournament dubbed by some as the ‘IPL of chess’ witnessed a record participation of 274 players with 223 International Rated players from 15 States across India and special units from Southern Railways, ICF Andhra Bank and KVB.

Inaugurated by the directors of Tetrasoft, Hyderabad in the presence of the esteemed chief guest Shri. K S Prasad, Secretary of Telangana State Chess Association, the tournament boasted of a prize money purse of 5 lacs. Mr. Prasad, in his address to the media thanked the IT giants Tetrasoft for sponsoring the chess event and helping develop chess in India.

As the exciting tournament progressed in its usual nail-biting manner International Master Saravana Krishnan P and Grandmaster Deepan Chakravarthy J from ICF tied for first with 8 points each. After a thrilling tie breaker IM Saravana Krishnan P – KVB emerged as Champion of the event. Mr. Krishnan noted that the Tetrasoft tournament was “The strongest Open Rated tournament I have been a part of in recent times.”

The tournament embodied the vibes of a chess carnival. Coincidentally the event witnessed participation from India’s oldest & youngest chess player Mr. T V Subramaniam and Ms. Samhitha Pungavanam respectively. The man who brought it all together Mr. Srikanth Malladi of SMCA, when asked about the planning and prep for the event said “ the planning for this tournament began a year ago..it would not have been possible without the support of our sponsor Tetrasoft. The first edition of the tournament was very well conducted hence this year with their support we could plan bigger. We got into contact with Marriot and the rest is history.” Rama S. Eyunni, CEO of Tetrasoft stated that “… as chess is an intellectual game with various health benefits, we deem it to be an ideal sport to be promoted. It’s also taken up by many as their career hence in terms of skill development it is very beneficial.”

Conducted at the Marriott Hotel, the unparalleled comforts provided was appreciated by all attendees. “The ambience of the tournament was great for the players, usually GM tournaments are conducted in such huge portals but ‘normal open FIDE’ conducted at the Marriott... we are truly lucky to experience such good ambience, the children were very comfortable and all facilities were well maintained” - Nandita Kanyamaralar, parent of Tarun & Trisha

Messages of thanks and praise for the meticulously organized tournament has been filling up Mr. Malladi’s incoming feed.

The number of chess enthusiasts in the nation have risen and such tournaments are the need of the hour to develop chess talent in India. We are surely looking forward to what Mr. Srikant can come up with next in association with ACT - SMCA & ICS the leading chess academy of India.
