Mumbai: Seven-year-old Kush Bhagat has emerged as another wonder kid from the western Metropolis of Mumbai after he bagged all the three gold medals on offer in the 1st Western under 8 Asia Youth Chess Championship that concluded in Al Ain chess club, UAE, on Thursday.

The second standard student of the NSS Hill Spring International School reigned supreme in all the three categories – Rapid, Blitz and standard -- to stun the crowd at Al Ain chess club. By doing so, he achieved the feat of being the only Indian to bag all the crowns in the prestigious competition.

Kush won rapid format with a brilliant score of 6.5 points out of 7 possible while in the blitz, it was no stopping him as he finished with seven out of seven rounds with a clear two-point margin over his closest rival. In the standard format, he registered seven wins and a couple of draws to assert his position atop the table. He overcame the challenges from 158 participants from 20 countries across the world.

The seven-year-old trainee of the South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA) is the current Under 7 World Schools Blitz champion. He won the title just a week ago in Sochi after having already won the Maharashtra U-7 Chess title.

Kush’s unbeaten run in the championship had only a few obstacles which he overcame nevertheless. His game against Srilanka's Wickramarathne TD lasted for more than three hours which he eventually clinched with an exemplary queen side attack to show the Sri Lankan champion the exit door.

Excited with the performance, Kush’s coach Balaji Guttula showered praise for the youngster. “Kush's main forte is his swift calculations… he thinks lightning fast with deep and accurate calculations of moves. This is what sets him apart from his contemporaries,” Guttula of SMCA said.

“Kush has the potential to rewrite history books and this is just a beginning. He will achieve many more in the days to come,” hoped the proud coach
